The sails are set, the rigging begins to groan as the big ship moves over the waves leaving the land as a thin line on the horizon. The sailors check and recheck to see that all the gear and the cargo is safely lashed down. The officer of the watch is confirming the course of the vessel. It's a scene repeated times without number over years of ocean voyages, but one question we would like to ask the captain, "Whither bound?" What is the destination of this vessel after weeks at sea when the storms and dangers are past? It's the all important question because no captain would sail without the assurance that there was a destination; sailing to oblivion would be unthinkable. And yet, in the voyage of life many people give little thought to the eternal destination of their precious soul. Excuses abound for this lack of forethought: "too busy", "not right now", or "when I finish my project, I'll think a little deeper".

Life is a serious matter...

The Bible always urges us to think about the life beyond this life. It says that our lives are more than the clothes we are wearing or the food we are eating today; it emphasizes the value of the soul, the spirit, that imperishable part of our person.

The Bible speaks clearly of a destination called Heaven. Millions who once lived here on earth are there already. They have passed on to the place that the Lord Jesus called "My Father's house". [John 14:2] No wonder the Lord told His disciples in the same conversation, "Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled neither let it be afraid." [John 14:27] '. Nothing can bring deep and abiding peace to the troubled heart like knowing that all is well between myself and God.

Salvation is not a prize or a reward - It is a gift...

Peace with God is actually a gift from God; it is not a prize for good behavior or a reward for meritorious service; it is forgiveness from God for the sins of our lives, and it is available to the human family because of the death of Christ upon the Cross. It is received by faith by those who realize they have nothing to offer a Holy God. The Bible says, "The gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord." [Rom 6:23] Heaven would not be a very nice place if it was filled with people boasting about their wonderful lives of service or volunteerism or morality. Actually the eternal song of Heaven is going to be one of thanksgiving to Christ the Savior who died upon the Cross to save the lost.

What about rejection...?

Perhaps there is a reader who asks, "What if I reject God's offer of salvation?" It is a serious question and one to ponder. It would be unthinkable to reject a birthday gift or to ignore a present sent by a friend. What about shunning the greatest of all gifts offered by God Himself? It would be a calamity. The Lord Jesus stated, "He that hath the Son hath everlasting life: and he that believeth not the Son shall not see life but the wrath of God abideth upon him." [John 3:36]
